Membership Types
Membership types
A number of different membership options are available to allow for individual circumstances and levels of experience. If you are not sure which is the most appropriate, our membership secretary will be pleased to advise.
A summary of the different types of membership is below:
Full Membership
Full members form the active heart of our club. You must become a full member if you wish to bring a boat to the club. Only full members may speak or vote at club general meetings, and only full members may serve on the committee. Full membership is restricted to adults over 18 years of age. Younger sailors can join as family, cadet or midshipman members.
Family Membership
Sailing is a brilliant pastime for the whole family and we encourage family memberships which are a cost effective way to enjoy the hobby. This covers up to two adults and all children in full time education within their guardianship. One adult within a family membership is designated the lead member and holds equivalent privileges to a full member. The remaining members hold the equivalent of associate, cadet or midshipman membership depending on their age.
Dinghy Membership
This is the membership to choose if you only wish to mainly sail dinghies. There is no time limit for this annual membership type. With this membership, you are not limited to the number of times you visit TYC and use the club facilities. You do not need to sign the guest book, and you can sign guests in to TYC. Please be aware that, for safety reasons, you will need to sign into a different book before you sail. With Dinghy membership you are allowed to attend the club unattended. You can sail with the dinghies, and captain a dinghy (if you have enough experience) at dinghy events free of charge. Within this category, you may only sail on yachts for random events for a maximum of 4 times a year. As a dinghy member, you cannot own or have a share in a yacht at TYC. You are allowed to vote at the AGM. With a dinghy membership, you are allowed to have keys to the club gates. You can join TYC work parties, events, and social functions. You may book the TYC premises for private events.
Upriver Membership
This is the membership to choose if all you wish to do at TYC is attend social events and not sail. There is no time limit for this annual membership type. With this membership you are not limited to the number of times you visit TYC and use the club facilities. You do not need to sign the guest book when you visit but you are not able to sign guests into TYC. With this category you may only sail yachts for random events for a maximum of 4 times a year. Please be aware for safety reasons you will need to sign a different book before you sail. There is no limit to the number of times you visit TYC including helping at work parties, social functions and helping members to repair their boats. With Upriver membership you can pay the person sail per use charge (£10) at any event should you wish to sail. However, you cannot captain a dinghy sailing event free of charge even if you are experienced. Upriver members cannot own or have a part share in a boat at TYC. You are not allowed to vote at the AGM or be a keyholder of the gates. As an Upriver member you are able to book the TYC premises for private events. You can join TYC work parties and social functions.
Associate Membership
This membership is aimed at adults over 25 years of age who have a close family relationship to a full member. A typical scenario is a husband or wife of a full member who may serve as crew, or parents of Cadet and Midshipman members who do not (yet) have an ambition to owning a boat.
Crew Membership
This is our "taster" option, aimed at newcomers to the sport who may not feel ready to buy their own boat or feel confident enough to commit to a full membership. This 12 month membership can be taken out any time of the year. It provides access to all club facilities and events, except that it does not allow for keeping a boat at the club, or voting an any general meeting. It really is a cracking value option for those who just want to experience sailing.
Cadet Membership
This is our entry level membership for junior sailors, aged between 8 and 17.
Midshipman Membership
This membership is aged at young adults who are aged 18 or over, but are under the age of 25, and who want to sail but do not have their own boat.
Country Membership
This is our "distance" membership aimed at Full Members who move away from the area, but still wish to retain an association with the club. Country members relinquish their Full Member privileges.
Senior Citizen Membership
One for the saltier sea dog, this membership is open to long serving members who have officially retired after they turn 65. This membership holds equivalent rights to full members.
Honorary Membership
This illustrious status is bestowed upon individuals who have provided a high degree of service to the club, but who do not hold any formal membership. The honorary list is reviewed annually at the club AGM.
